ASISTM Programme Aberfoyle Cluster

Aberfoyle Park High School, Aberfoyle Hub Primary School and Craigburn Primary School are involved in a programme to produce a professional development package for teachers to engage students in environmental studies with a focus of the Mathematics and Science involved.

This site is a place for the teachers involved in the design of the package to reflect on the journey that they have engaged upon and to share the resources that they have gathered.

Materials from this page can now be found on the ASISTM website.

You are encouraged to have a look and to participate in the discussions and chats regarding materials that are being posted.

As soon as I get details of all the Aberfoyle Cluster Group members names, emails etc I can arrange user names and passwords. Alice will be in touch with you soon about this information.

Please don't add any new material to this site, use the website when you have access.

cheers

Jayne

Hi everyone,

I expect like me you are all flat getting organised for the end of the year . Can't come quick enough for me!

I thought you may want to hear about the plans the Project Governance Group have for a 2 day workshop for all participants during term 1 2006. You may wish to flag your involvement with your Principal and staff this year to help you make some arrangements such as release time.

The website is well on the way to being developed and Alice should contact you this week (if she gets a chance!) for details to assist us to organise your login.

Let me know what you think if you have the time and inclination, I look forward to working with you next year. Enjoy your break!

Jayne :)

I found criticism of Russell's stutter a bit harsh... the  fact that he has been able to string together in  a sentence, more than five words that are are also polysyllabic, speaks volumes for his intellectual growth over the past six years.

Warmest Regards,

Hi everyone

My name is Sophie and i am a year 10 student at APHS.  This year i studied year 11 biology.  I was recently introduced to the whole project and i think it's all a bit confusing at the moment!  Up until two days ago i thought the creek was just a drain at the bottom of our school.

I think it is probably a good idea to test the water, then test it again later to see how it has changed.  Like me, i think most people aren't really aware that there even is a creek there.

Personally i don't know anything about water sampling or pH levels, but studying Biology means i have a bit of an idea about things like plant classification.

From Aberfoyle - 11/29/05 1:24 PM

G'day Jayne et al,

I hope the new website is going to be as easy to access, and add to as this is - (I am a bear of very little brain). Despite this I've conned a couple of Yr 10 students who have a free line, having now satisfied some Yr11 committments, to come on board with their suggestions and perceptions re "the project" - perhaps they can come up with a name!?  I'm getting them to post some responses next thursday - watch this space!

Thanks for chasing up Mike re the water testing Rebecca. I'm yet to organise a time and place - watch this space too!!

From asmslibrary - 11/28/05 8:10 PM

Hi everyone!

I thought I had posted comments on the 7th Nov Comments section not long after our day at ASMS but to no avail! I still need my learner plates it seems!

I had in mind a form of short questionnaire for teachers to complete as a starting point for your work on this project, a sort-of bench mark in relation to knowledge of the science and maths you will be working with in the project. What do you think?

Similarly we need to gather data from students on their starting point knowledge, motivation, interest... whatever it is in particular you want to foucs on. If I recall rightly from the discussions on the 7th, people were keen to see how opportunities to work out in the field alongside scientists and doing things like collecting info on the environment over an extended period of time could develop students undertandings of the concepts and methods of the associated science and maths and develop students skills in self directed learning.

We have also had a meeting of the program cluster groups mangers. Alice is your rep!! (on ya Alice!) and the group discussed the website format for this project. I am able to to announce the web developer will start work on the site next Monday 5th Nov. Have you any ideas on what you need the site to do to support your work? We have in mind links to this Wiki and features to support curriculum materials being posted for comment by other cluster gourp members to help get ready for the final product. Then also features to support teachers sharing their wexperinces in using the materials and following the program developed. The scientists/FU associates will have acccess to this discussion and be available to provide their expertise and assistance where needed, ie questions that may arise about the science etc. Let me know what you think.

Cheers, Jayne

:)

If you have a chance letl me know what you think.

I have put the most recent photos on this page so people can find them!

From craw0069 - 11/20/05 8:50 PM

Hi Clustered Aberfoyle People

Did you notice that your page did not fit and the right hand menu was hiding? I shrank your photos and that brought the page into alignment.  If you think the image is now too small, you can move it back and live with the need to scroll right.  Secondly, when you add an image as an attachment, tick the HIDE button so that the list does not appear on the page.  It will appear in the EDIT mode.

Just a little WIKI management.

Pauline

Could all the Aberfoyle people please check the email address added to your logon.  Pauline is getting 12 emails a day from this group. (each time a change is made). Interesting, but not necessary.  Also, when can I delete these early messages?  It would be good to link a comments page to the front page and keep this space for announcements.

VISIT TO MARCO PILLEN'S

Thursday 17th November, meet at APHS at 8.15am. OK???

Rebecca, can you ask Mike if he would like to come too? Thanks!

(still can't see the image gallery Jo!)

From pnield - 11/8/05 6:49 PM

Field river data from 2000 and 2002 is now posted for referal. (Copies of the full report submitted by Rachel Nield can be obtained from a cluster school member. They were handed out at the meeting at ASMS on Nov 9 2005)

From Rjohns - 11/7/05 5:35 PM

Has anyone seen the pictures in the photo gallery lately?

From pnield - 11/7/05 5:24 PM

Do any of the ideas on my page seem too "over the top" for upper primary or secondary students to attempt

From pnield - 11/7/05 4:49 PM

Russell, I didn't know you typed with a stutter.

From Rjohns - 11/7/05 12:19 PM

Still to come....

  • date with Marco
  • links to photo gallery
  • sampling from the river with Mike's mate
  • meeting time from "seamless" George
  • a bit more data logging - let's see what Lee Barker (APHS) has up his sleeve?

Data has been collected from the Field river at 4 locations by 2 year 12 students.(one in 2000 and the other in 2002) The information involves pH, Phosphates, Nitrates and Dissolved Oxygen. Who would like to see the data posted on this wiki.

From ageorge - 11/7/05 9:14 AM

It appears that we are finally starting to get a sense of where we are going to take this project. The possibilities for a true Middle Schooling approach are exciting, in fact, seamless articulation is fast becoming a reality.

From pnield - 11/7/05 9:14 AM

Lindsay, be patient

From lingham - 11/7/05 9:12 AM

I notice the picture has disappeared from this page.

From Rjohns - 11/7/05 8:52 AM

"wiki" - been there, done that, tick it off!

Still to come - 'action reasearch' and data loggers.

Check out the photos from Thursdays field trip to Saubier Creek and Field River. Big thanks to Mike(Onkaparinga Catchment Board)

(Rebecca's still a bit dark at not having administative rights)
