Applications: Introduction

The Applications give students the opportunity to choose one aspect of language and communication and to spend time putting into practice strategies that will allow them to demonstrate their understanding of what they have observed. They will be drawing on knowledge, skills, strategies, and understanding gained through their studies in order to demonstrate their ability to use language for particular purposes.

Students are required to develop a product and to reflect on the process of development.

SSABSA Curriculum Statement 2005

As you read the course outline carefully, notice the different requirements for each Application. Notice as well the different assessment criteria for different Applications. Some teachers decide that every English Communications student will do the same Application in the same semester. Others allow choices from the list. If in doubt, ask you teacher for advice.

Brainstorm ideas with a partner.

Discuss different ways to collect your ideas together. You might use a graphic organiser, (a Mind Map or Inspiration). Will you keep a hand written journal, an electronic collection or design your own edit.me site?

It is most useful to keep a journal of all the interactions, thoughts, ideas and contacts you make. It would be most sensible to include notes, diagrams, copis of letters, emails and all other information in one place.

An action plan could benefit those who need to practice time management.

Check with your teacher that the ideas you are working on fit in with the criteria.

Now, start you first journal entry (carefully adding the dates).

Journal entries due:

1: Term 1 week 6

Ideas, first thoughts, plans, action plans, people to contact, ways to go about activities, etc.

2: Term 1 week 8

Ideas from others, show changes to original thoughts, early challenges, successes.

3: Term 1 week 10

Details of activites with quotations, examples, print out of drafts, storyboards or whatever is appropriate to your individual work.

For the Term 3 Application download the word document below.
