Visual texts

Show Menu

As part of your work in Visual Texts in Communication Systems, every student needs to build a wiki about visual texts. You will need to show that you have read at least ten different titles. Remember that this is not a time to "review".  It is a chance for you to show interesting and innovative ways to respond to these texts.

Too many people think that picture books are only for children.  Be persuasive (if you enjoyed that text.) Be clear about what you did and didn't like. You could consider these as ways to start your writing. Try to have a range of different reponses. Vary your audience, and purpose.

  1. Your brother needs to choose a Christmas present for a nine year old niece.  Write persuasively in favour of a title.
  2. This title won an award. Convince me it shouldn't have.
  3. This title didn't win an award. Say why you think it should have.
  4. You can choose the illustrator for a new book. Refer closely to one already published, explaining why the company should use that illustrator again.
  5. You are considering going to art school. Convince your parents that there is money to be made as a book writer. refer closely to a text.
  6. Have you seen the fees art schools charge? With close reference to a text, show that art is more than 'colouring in'.
  7. Find your own interesting way to write about a text.

I repeat REVIEWS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. You don't need pictures.  Words count.

OK the top comment was made by Pauline (using Eddie's logon 'cos he was helping her make changes.)  Does sound like a suck up, but what would you expect from an english teacher?

So where are all the great comments from students?  Could a link to each student's page be made here?

I like the idea of NOT writing reviews. They are so limiting and so boring to read.  Judgemental as well.  Let's all get excited about the images.  The pictures in "Gorilla" really suggest a liitle girl who has been ignored. It is easier to hone into ONE aspect of the book, rather than glossy attempts to talk about everything. Concentrate on one or two strong ideas.  Colour. Artwork. How the pictures reinforce the words.  How the words really are more important.  Mixed media and tapestries.  Whole worlds in child size and point of view.  Just FOCUS.
