Hybrid Cars Work

Electric and Fossil Fuel Driven Vehicles

The standard fossil fuel driven car features an engine, powered by a fossil fuel (petrol, LPG, diesel), that turns a transmission, resulting in the turning of the wheels. The following interactive animation provides more detail – drag the mouse over the various components to view brief information about each one.

Although fast and reliable, the fossil fuel driven car is not an environmentally friendly technology. The burning of fossil fuels releases numerous pollutants which have damaging, long-lasting effects on the environment. Also, fossil fuels will not be around for much longer as the world’s fossil fuel reserves are rapidly depleting. By the year 2050, experts predict that these reserves will be completely exhausted.
