Solar Power for DUMMIES

back

On our website we have looked at modern fossil fuel burning powerstations, solar power and the potential for solar power to generate electricity as alternative to the powerstations. We have been focussing on how solar power can be used for households in SA.

Our plan is to equip each household with a number of flat panels called 'solar cells' these would sit on the roof or other places which catch the sun and make electricity for the home. The cells are specially designed to turn sunlight into electricity using a process called the 'photovoltaic effect'.

As the sun doesnt shine all the time, this does not mean we can only have the lights on during the day when the sun is shining. We can either use batteries to store the extra electricity made by the 'solar cells' when there is lots of sunlight; or we can take power from the 'electricity grid' when we need it and feed our extra electricity made in the day back into the grid for others to use. (Most homes are connected to the 'electricity grid' which is a network of powerlines that connect houses to powerstations).

In our future it would be good to see each household turned into a mini powerstation that used 'renewable' resources and hopefully did little harm to the environment.
