Adam Bowering's Visual Text

Visual Text response

Animalia - Gary Crew:

Animalia for a childrens present:

Animalia is an exciting and colourful book that would be great as a childrens present, although it wouldn't appeal to all ages. The bright and colourful pictures would be totally useless with those below the age of 4-5, but would be favourable for those above this age. The book has many last qualities that can be rediscovred each time a reader may read the book, making it a worthwhile long lasting present.

The Water Tower - Gary Crew

The Water won an award in the childrens picture book catagory, here is why it shouldn't have:

The water tower is a misleading book that many delude readers as to what a picture book really is. Although the generally bright and colourful pictures are often broken up by shapes, and distracting from how talented the illistrator really is. The story line is vauge at best, with no real direction the book is going except two children swimming. This book deffinately should not have won an award.

Help! I'm cracking up! - Tedd Arnold

This book never won an award, this is why it should have:

Help! I'm cracking up is an interesting book, that is different from many or most children books. It's light and fun attitude makes it in a class of its own. The original illistrations show children books aren't always serious and dificult to read, but should be a recreation enjoyed by all people. This book reaches out beyond the words and illistrations to touch the reader, leaving them with an unforgettable experience unlike any other picture book.

 Crocodile Beat - Gail Mullins

You are considering going to art school. Convince your parents that there is money to be made as a book writer. refer closely to a text:

There is much money in picture books, illistrations are an important role of picture books. In every picture book one of the main elements are the illistrations, bringing life and colour to normal text. Often the illistrations demonstrate a totally different story to what the book is telling, like in Rosie's Walk. ALthough not all illistrations are hand drawn, like Crocodile Beat, is a collage of tissue paper, that gives the book a different water colour feel from many other picture books.

Billy The Punk - Jessic Carroll

The "alternative" children's book award:

Billy the punk is one of the few children's books in the world that bridge the gap between what is "normal" and what is seen to be "different". This book demonstrates to a young audience that it is ok to not be like everyone else, but to be an idividualist is a good thing, it builds charachter and stregnth. Furthermore that people should follow their dreams and ambitions, even if they are a little strange and out of the ordinary.

Millie - John Marsden

The "original illistrations" children's book award:

Millie was illistrated by Sally Rippin in an original sytlistic manner. Millie has been brought to life by the original art work put into the book, the picture tell a very different story to what the text says. The illistrations are a major part of this book, and really outline the true originality that is Millie. The mix of water colours and crayons, make Millie look like it was drawn by a child with some water colour and red crayon, yet it is plain to see much detial has bene put into the book. This is why i believe it should win this award.

The Sign of the Seahorse - Graeme Base

A book for advanced readers:There are few picture books in the world that blend the use of bright colourful pictures with a flow of text, that tell a detailed story. Many picture books opt for a simple story line with original pictures that help tell the story, but unlike most authors Graeme Base has decided to create a picture book that is both bright and colourful, but has an in depth picture book that could be enjoyed by advanced readers, while still enjoying all the elements a picture book has to offer. Although the complexity of the writing is not reflected into the pictures, with intricate drawings that have much colour and detail that provides the story with an extra storyline that accentuates the writing.

V for Vanishing - Patricia Mullins

The young learners award:

V for vanishing is a simple book that contains the alphabet with a corresponding animal for that lettter. The detialed pictures are a collage of tissue paper used to create life-like images of animals in stunning detail. The materials used to create the drawings make true to life textures of animals skin and fur, which drawn attention to questions like "what are these animals", provoking thought and intrest in any age reader. This is one of the few childrens books that open the world of the alphabet to the reader wihtout a strong focus on words or charachters, this is why this book should have won the young leaners award.

There's a sea in my Bedroom - Margret Wild

Imagination award:

There's a sea in my bedroom is an original text unlike any other picture book. opening the world of imagination to the reader from the first page, the inspiring images of the ocean hold a sense of wonder to the reader who may be intruiged as to where the title fits into the book. The refreshingly well drawn pictures throughout the book highlight the talented artist the illistrater is, but also the vibrant colour gives an edge that many oher picture books do not have. The pure ingenious story line leads the reader through the imaginitive world of a young boy fascinated with the ocean and its surroundngs, this book truely is original and deserves the imagination award.
