The Waterhole by Graeme Base This picture book relies heavily on its illustrations. Because the text is very limited, it is up to the illustrator (Graeme Base also) to paint the picture in the readers head. The use of colours and the high level of detail are major contributors for making the pictures look very realistic. Another technique that is used quite well is the size of the pictures. Because the size of the pictures are so big, the author in this book soley relies on the quality on the pictures because the publisher and author knows that will sell the most books. The Tin-Pot Foreign General and the Old Iron Woman by Raymond Briggs This story has a political agenda behind it. The demographic is not for little kids but adults. Within some of the disgusting images of political leaders, there is some deep and meaningful pictures showing the "sad little island". This shows to the readers that they must have been through alot when the war happened. Although the book is aimed at the adult demographic, the text is very basic. The Great Escape by Philippe Dupasquier This picture book more like a comic than anything. The pages include panels very much like a comic but there is no text. This is aimed at a young demograohic because it gives them to think what the characters might say. The pictures are very well drawn and the illustrations have a distinct look to them, very much like the Tintin books. With the amount of action that the pictures show, it is very good for the younger demographic. Rain Dance by Cathy Applegate and Dee Huxley The artisitic flair of these illustrations is exceptional. The use of the distince colours show the desolate place that is the Australian Outback. With the great artwork comes the meaningful text showing some of the pain that people in the outback are going through because of the drought. Soe of the images shown when it starts to rain are very good, showing the happiness on the families faces. The book shows hope for the people in the area. This book is designed for a wide demographic becauseit can affect people at all ages. The Viewer by Gary Crew and Shaun Tan The viewer uses darker colours during the story to show the darkness of the storyline. A technique that is used well is the text positioning on some pages. For example, on page 29 the text spirals inward which ties in well with the viewer. Another example of text positioning is having all the text on the left hand side of the double page, then one full picture. Another technique that is used is the level of detail. The level of detail shows the realisim that the story is trying to present. Revolting Rhymes by Roald Dahl and Illustrated by Quentin Blake Roald Dahl is a classic childrens book writer. The Illustrations that are done pretty much have the same style that are in all his books and therefore identifiy that this will be a high quality book. The illustrations show to me shows that the reader knows that this is fiction. The amount of text on this book doesnt make this a picture book but rather a series of short stories. This is chosen because of the aimed demographic. Another element that is noticed is the language that is used and the somewhat twisted storylines that are presented. Thses are chosen because of the authors style and the thats the language and or storyline that appeals to that specific age group. Pat Hutchins Rosies Walk This book has limited text so this picture book relies on the pictures to tell the story. The patterns in the pictures show the cartoon like picturs very well. Another good technique that is used is the positioning of the fox. The fox is in a variety of hieghts through the novel. This shows that the fox is trying to chase down Rosie the hen. The colours that are used in this picture book shows the daylight of the location. Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy by Lynley Dodd Some good techniques that are used in this book include the bright and light colours used, the detail of the dogs and the language that is used in the picture book. The bright and light colours that are used are to show the daylight where the story is set and to show the realisim of the story as well. The detail of the dogs show that the dogs would exist in real life. The language and the few words that are used is very basic and is focused in on the younger demographic. Half-Life by Valve This game was very revolutionary for its time. It's genre, First Person Shooters were generally shoot 'em up games with no storyline what so ever. Then came Half-Life, Half-Life uses s good futuristic storyline that definately appeals to most teenage boys. The fast paced and action facet to the game also appeals to that designated demographic. Another technique that Half-Life used well was the interaction between the A.I units to help bolster the storyline. Last Modified 9/13/05 9:01 AM | Hide Tools |
